The term "independent peer review" is applied across the resource industry to a wide range of activities, much as "bankable feasibility study" came to describe everything from a desktop screen to a definitive study. What is presented to the board as independent assurance is, on examination, often neither independent of the project sponsor nor delivered by peers in any defensible sense of the term. Three approaches dominate. 1) The internal senior review, in which a major selects two or three of its own engineers who were not assigned to the project and represents the exercise as independent. The reviewers report up the same chain as the sponsor, depend on the same executives for their next assignment, and have an interest in the findings being received as constructive. Only the largest internationals have a bench deep enough to source credibly independent individuals, and even they supplement with externals on material decisions. 2) The management consultant stage gate, structured around a generic framework and conducted by personnel who are intelligent and well presented but who have not held line responsibility for the design, construction or commissioning of a comparable asset. The output measures process compliance. Engineering judgement against the business case is what the board requires, and on that measure the peer test is not met. 3) Engineering verification by another engineering house. Technical competence is adequate, but the firms are direct competitors who exchange staff and bid against each other on subsequent work. The incentive to identify a fundamental flaw in a competitor's study is weak, and the scope is narrow technical assurance rather than business case validation. The methodology to address these gaps was developed during the 1990s with the majors. "Peer" is held to mean best in class in the relevant function, with a demonstrated track record and the personal confidence of the directors and executives, rather than merely senior or available. The business case is at the centre of every review, designed backward from the decision the board has to make on the commitment of shareholder funds. Findings are reported balanced, with positives alongside deltas. All matters of Fact are reconciled, with evidence on the table, before the report is signed, and matters of Opinion in dispute are published within the report, with the project team's position recorded.

The rainy season poses significant challenges to mining operations. Haul trucks get stuck in soft ground, haul roads deteriorate, and pit and dump floors become boggy and slippery. Despite these challenges, supervisors and mine leadership must stay a step ahead by initiating wet-weather preparations well in advance, ideally five months before the onset of the rains. Competent sheeting material is not always readily available, which makes understanding pit rock configuration critical. This knowledge enables proactive decisions, such as stockpiling competent material for road and loading bay sheeting when conditions deteriorate. Upon reporting for the night shift, I found the pit loading bay in very poor condition. I immediately assigned a dozer to skim off the soft material, carried out extensive box cutting, and sheeted the area with approximately one metre of competent material. The result was a stable loading bay that allowed operations to run smoothly for the remainder of the 12-hour shift. Although we lost about one and a half hours to restore the conditions, the decision was worthwhile. It eliminated the risk of equipment damage, improved safety, and reduced unnecessary costs associated with burning fuel while dispatching only a few trucks due to poor conditions. These are the types of decisions supervisors must be willing to make. In many cases, it is better to temporarily shut down an operation, fix the problem properly, and resume efficiently rather than operate under unsafe and uneconomical conditions. Equally important, day shift teams must work proactively to prepare work areas for incoming shifts, ensuring conditions are favourable and operations remain sustainable. Mining is a business, effective planning is essential to keep operations safe, efficient, and running.

The scale of demand for these minerals could result in almost 400 new mines by 2035. ⭐️ How can we manage demand? We can design energy and transport systems to minimise mineral demand. Strategies include: 🫵 reducing our dependence on cars and using smaller vehicles 🫵 improving energy efficiency 🫵 moving to a circular economy that makes reuse and recycling a priority. All these changes can reduce the need for new mines. Recycling, for example, could reduce demand for mined materials. Bajo este preámbulo podemos afirmar que hoy en día en la mayoría de las veces se diseñan mallas de perforación y Voladura sin conocer parámetros límites tan importantes como la Velocidad Critica de Partícula de la Roca (Vcrit) de acuerdo a la clasificación Geomecanica y la Carga Operante Máxima (Q') que es la cantidad máxima de explosivo a detonar. Bajo ese escenario es imposible contrastar lo resultados obtenidos para el diseño contra lo que admite o resiste el MACIZO ROCOSO . Dilution control is a very interesting topic and applies mainly to metal mines, but which can be of great importance for several operations, whether underground or open pit. This theme is very broad and there are several possibilities and techniques, which will depend on the scenarios and resources available, but in order not to make our article too long, we will direct our comments around a case study that we are carrying out these days, but it is worth noting that the general comments we will make apply to most cases of dilution control. Before sharing a little about the technique we are using, it is important to understand that in a very brief way, the “dilution” represents the percentage (%) of mixture between two elements that we do not want to mix, where the simplest example we have in mining are the contacts between ore and overburden, the ideal scenario being that they do not mix, so that we can remove all the ore without it being contaminated by the overburden. This is very important in some metal mines, such as gold or copper, where grades are really limiting factors for the economic viability of operations and small variations can strongly affect the recovery of the mineral of economic interest. So when we talk about dilution control, what we want is to ensure that the sterile material does not mix with the ore (or materials of different contents), so that the original content of the material can be maintained. When we apply this concept to rock blasting, we can usually do it in two ways/techniques: 1. Separation: where during detonation a real separation of materials of different types/contents is carried out, directing them in the opposite direction, where the expected result is that we have “separated” piles. 2. Preservation (Do not mix): when, during detonation, one seeks to maintain the natural conditions of contact, without the material mixing, that is, leaving them in the same original configuration after dismantling, with no or minimal movement during the detonation. An important observation is that the “perception of separation” is not always as clear as in the illustrations above, as the materials may have the same color or similar characteristics, making it difficult to visually identify the dilution of the materials...
