How In-Situ Joints Affect Explosive Energy Distribution During Blasting Rock masses in mining and quarrying environments are rarely intact; they are intersected by natural joints, fractures, and bedding planes. These in-situ discontinuities significantly influence how explosive energy is transmitted and utilized during blasting. When properly understood and incorporated into blast design, they can aid fragmentation. However, when ignored, they may lead to inefficient energy usage and poor blast outcomes (See attached Video). Impact of In-Situ Joints on Energy Distribution Explosives generate high-pressure gases intended to create new fractures and displace rock. In a massive, competent rock with minimal joints, most of this energy contributes directly to breakage. However, in jointed rock masses, energy behaves differently. Joints weaken the structural integrity of the rock, providing planes of weakness through which energy can escape. If the existing joints are not accounted for, explosive energy may simply displace in-situ rock blocks along these planes rather than fracture them (See attached Video). Instead of breaking the rock into controlled fragments, the blast may push intact blocks outward, resulting in oversize fragments, back-break, and uneven muck profiles. This inefficiency increases downstream processing costs and reduces overall blast performance. Rock Failure and Stress Redistribution in Rock Masses Rock masses exist in a natural state of equilibrium, where in-situ stresses are balanced by the strength and confinement of the rock. Rock failure occurs when this equilibrium is disturbed, causing the stresses within the rock mass to exceed its strength. Such disturbances can result from both natural processes and human activities, particularly in mining, tunneling, and quarrying operations. One common cause of stress disturbance is the creation of a cavity within a rock mass. When material is removed, the original stress field can no longer be maintained, and stresses are redistributed around the opening. This redistribution often leads to stress concentration along the boundaries of the excavation, increasing the likelihood of deformation, cracking, or failure if the rock mass cannot adequately support the new load conditions. Blasting represents a more dynamic and intense source of stress disturbance. Beyond simply removing rock, blasting introduces shock waves, high gas pressures, and ground vibrations that temporarily but significantly alter the stress environment. These stress waves can propagate through the rock mass, activating existing discontinuities such as joints, bedding planes, and faults. The reduction in confinement and the weakening of these structural features can substantially reduce rock mass stability. As stresses are redistributed and confinement is lost, rock faces may experience sliding, spalling, or collapse. In slopes and open excavations, this can manifest as rock falls or planar and wedge failures, particularly where geological structures are unfavorably oriented. The risk of failure is further influenced by rock quality, in-situ stress conditions, blast design, and the proximity of excavations to free faces. Understanding the relationship between stress redistribution and rock failure is critical for safe and efficient rock engineering. Proper excavation sequencing, controlled blasting techniques, and continuous monitoring of rock mass response are essential measures to manage stress-induced instabilities. By accounting for these factors, engineers can minimize the risk of rock failure and maintain the long-term stability of rock structures. The video shared by Bernard Saw as attached to this post clearly demonstrates how excavation activities can trigger rock failure. As material is removed from the rock mass, the natural stress equilibrium is disturbed, forcing stresses to redistribute around the newly created opening. When the rock mass is unable to accommodate these changes, instability develops, resulting in cracking, sliding, and eventual failure of the rock face. The video provides a practical visual example of how excavation-induced stress changes can directly compromise rock mass stability.

Case Study: Effect of Stemming Length on Blast Fragmentation – Part 2 This part of this article evaluates a granite quarry blast introduced in Part 1 of my post (https://lnkd.in/efKgchFt), which consisted of two sections designed with different stemming lengths. The decision to adjust the stemming length was driven by the need for improved confinement, aiming to reduce excessive energy venting and mitigate poor fragmentation caused by energy loss. The first image illustrates the division of the blast: one section with a 1.8 m stemming length and the other with a 2.0 m stemming length. Each blast hole was drilled on a 2.7 m × 2.3 m pattern, and the stemming material used had a D80 size of 22 mm. Results show that while the 2.0 m stemming zone provided better confinement, it produced coarser fragments due to pre-existing geological fractures. The lack of confinement prevents the explosive from fully fracturing the burden, often resulting in oversized boulders, uneven muckpiles, and inefficiencies in crushing and hauling. 2. Over-Stemming (Too Long) When the stemming column is longer than necessary: a. Energy is overly confined and may not generate adequate heave. b. Fragmentation becomes finer near the collar but may remain coarse at depth. c. Potential for poor throw and tight muckpiles if explosive energy cannot effectively mobilize the rock. d. Over-stemming can create a blast that breaks the collar region well but leaves deeper zones under-fragmented, affecting shovel diggability and crusher feed consistency. Lessons on the Effect of Fractures on Rock Fragmentation Rock fragmentation during blasting is strongly influenced by the interaction between stress waves and geological structures. Weak or less stiff zones, such as joints, bedding planes, or other discontinuities, reflect the incoming shock wave during detonation. This reflected energy increases damage on the opposite side of the discontinuity, often producing coarser fragmentation in those areas. Conversely, stronger and stiffer rock units transmit stress waves more efficiently. Blasting produces three primary damage zones within the rock mass: Crushed Zone This forms immediately around the borehole where the explosive shock wave exceeds the rock’s dynamic compressive strength, pulverizing the rock. Fracture Zone As the stress wave travels outward, the rock yields when the induced tensile stresses surpass the dynamic tensile strength. This creates radial and circumferential fractures extending several hole diameters from the blast hole (Ding et al., 2022). Spalling Zone The spalling zone develops when stress waves encounter a free face. The wave reflects back as a tensile wave, and if this reflected tensile stress exceeds the rock’s tensile strength, slabbing or thin “tile-like” breakage occurs (Zhang, 2016). The size and intensity of these zones depend on explosive type, energy characteristics, and rock mass properties. Influence of Geological Structures and Impedance The impedance mismatch between intact rock and geological structures also significantly affects the transmission and distribution of stress waves. When stress waves pass through materials with different densities or stiffness, their speed and amplitude change. This alters fragmentation patterns, influences damage zone extent, and affects material throw. Numerical and Field Evidence Numerical and field studies by Magreth Dotto Ph.D., P.Eng. and Yashar Pourrahimian provide valuable insight into damage distribution in jointed rock masses under blast loading: Their LS-DYNA numerical model for 51 mm holes shows the crushed zone radius extends 87.71 mm, approximately 1.72 times the borehole radius. Using peak particle velocity (PPV) criteria, the fracture zone extends to 3.02 m, or 59.2 times the hole radius. Field trials confirmed these results, with a crushing radius of 93.09 mm and a fracture radius of 3.1 m. PPV measurements showed a significant drop from 102 m/s near the hole to 2.35 m/s beyond the fracture zone indicating the rapid attenuation of energy after fracturing. Key Takeaway for Blasting Engineers A critical lesson from these findings is that the fracture zone generated around each blast hole must remain within the hole’s burden and spacing. If the induced fracture radius exceeds or become lesser than these design parameters, fragmentation becomes inconsistent and inefficient. Understanding the fracture zone radius is essential for designing burden, spacing, and energy distribution that deliver optimal fragmentation.

When an explosive detonates in a blasthole, it generates a high-pressure shock wave that radiates outward. This shock wave induces peak compressive strain at the blasthole wall, a critical point that determines how effectively the explosive energy is transmitted into the surrounding rock (Zhang, 2016). If the compressive strain remains below the rock’s crushing threshold, the energy propagates efficiently, initiating controlled radial fractures that extend outward. However, if the peak strain exceeds the rock's strength, a portion of the energy is wasted in pulverizing and crushing the immediate area around the blasthole, forming a damaged zone where fine particles dominate. Beyond the crushed zone, the shock wave transitions into tangential tensile waves, which promote the formation of radial cracks extending toward free faces. The interaction of these waves with pre-existing fractures further influences crack propagation, potentially arresting or redirecting the energy. Optimizing explosive energy to avoid excessive crushing while maximizing controlled fracturing is key to achieving efficient rock fragmentation, improving burden displacement, and minimizing energy loss. Preliminary investigations revealed that Yushua Maikampala, a resident of New Bussa in Niger State, had been illegally stockpiling explosives and accessories in a residential house located in Sabo Pegi, Mashegun Local Government Area. According to eyewitness accounts, the explosion occurred at approximately 7:00 AM on a Sunday morning. The blast completely destroyed the building where the explosives were stored and caused significant damage to 20 nearby houses, leaving at least two fatalities and several others injured. (2023) mentioned that oversize in a blast as those fragments larger than the crusher inlet, and “boulders” are rocks larger than the design spacing or burden set in the blast plan. Ideally, a well-designed blast should produce fragments small enough to avoid boulders, with exceptions mainly occurring due to overbreak. Rock Geology Variability: Variations in rock structure, including joints, faults, and rock density, can cause irregular breakage, sometimes leaving behind large, hard-to-break boulders. 4.
